Yes I had a dream. Not like Dr. Martin L. King! I dreamt my future birth center. I had my girls Camay & Alondra beside me of course. We are three powerful women on the move with an abundance of visions to share with the world. This has always been a dream of ours, we just weren't in the right place then. But now we are on our way...Alondra is a LCSW and doula; Camay is a doula, apprenticed midwife, and in a top NP program; and I am a doula, dancer, "herbalist" and on my way to start the RN program and from there a Masters in Midwifery from UCSF or Frontier. So here is part of the vision/dream - of course I dont wanna let all the cats out the bag:
The Birth Center targets women of color...mission is to reinstate traditional midwifery/healing practices, specifically in the African American community. It is an old Victorian house in the heart of Oak Park or West Oakland. Yes, you heard right! What most consider the hood or the ghetto. The home is transitioned into a lavish home away from home. As most would expect, it has its feel of Erykah Baduism, but its something that everyone can relate too. The inner walls are painted deep hues of earth to remind us of where it all began...birth, motherhood, human kind. Self-portraits of gorgeous Black, Latino, and Asian women lay against the earthen walls. Candles, incense of frankincense & myrrh, big sitting pillows to help us all remain grounded, and soft music playing in the background. Maybe some Beres Hammond, oceans, Capoeira, whateva you like (Coming to America Quote) LOL. Now of course no Black establishment would be right without some refreshments and vittles...so we have freshly prepared raw foods, healthy soul food, and tea to sooth the palette (red raspberry, nettles, dandelion, peppermint herbs).
Imagine a full kitchen, private rooms...each room is decorated with a different world theme if you will where mothers can chose which one gives them the best vibe. We have jacuzzi tubs for water births, traditional birthing stools, and a dance room. Yes! Dancing to bring that baby down, practice makes perfect. With all these wonderful amenities, comes the service. 3 women touching on each dynamic of a woman's life. She gets healed from the inside out: the social aspect, prenatal care, and delivered by a midwife. We are all doulas so we are sensitive to the support she needs in labor. And we can teach West African dance as our "Lamaze" if you will. I can see it now, its perfect, and possibly the first of its kind. Dream big and you can conquer the world!

oh yeah, can you take a client of the fair skin green eyed variety? lol
There was a recent article in the SF Chronicle, maybe on a Sunday, about some folks in West Oakland banding together to buy property and to build a community owned by the people who live there. It sounds like these are folks you need to know. Let me see if I can track something down.
