I highly encourage any and everyone that supports midwifery in any way to attend the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC) 6th Annual Black Midwives & Healers Conference October 10-12, 2008 in Harlem, NY! Although this is a FUBU event (for us by us), we welcome anyone as it will be an historical event.
ICTC is a non-profit grass roots organization striving to increase the number of Black Midwives all over the world, but particularly in the States. This conference is phenomenal every single year. I attended my first conference in Phoenix, AZ and I dont know that I have ever cried so much. Being surrounded by powerfully intelligent women walking the trenches of birth daily in our community not only inspired me to keep following my calling but to embrace all that is traditional as well. There are workshops focused on breastfeeding, suturing, doula certification, herbal treatment, and more. Not to mention the Friday night freestyle creativity session, documentary of Bringin in Da Spirit, and the Banquet honoring Granny midwives who have paved the way. We, people of African decent, have always been a people of tradition - both oral and written. We carry on these same traditions in midwifery and throughout this conference so it is very unique from any other conference you will attend. Please join us, hope to see you there.
