As Black History Month comes to a slow end this week, I have to discuss the lack of growth my 7yr old daughters school has achieved. To say that I am annoyed is not strong enough of a word: I am appalled! We are in 2008 and people still don't find it important to teach children about Black History?! This has become an epidemic at her school and I am really beginning to get pissed off. Last year I almost felt obligated since my daughter was the only African American in her class. On the contrary, that is not the case this year so there is no excuse. I am proud to say that my daughter took it upon herself to question her teacher at the beginning of the month what they were gonna do. Her teacher (whom I already have HUGE issues with) had the audacity to tell my child "the month just started!" in a sny tone of voice. I have a lot of patience, but I draw the line with random acts of frustration on my children!
Now here we are at the end of this VERY SHORT month and my child comes home telling me that they are learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Now isn't THAT a slap in the face! So now I am royally pissed and feel the need to start a 2nd grade revolution (LOL). Its not fair for my child continue to be forced into the role of "BHM teacher" or the renegade in the class; however, it is a great lesson to her that will only make her more confident and outspoken. SO...my solution? We will write a letter to the principal and address the issue hopefully with other parent support. Step 1...to change!
